Bridging Tradition and Innovation in Education
Balancing Legacy and Change to Inspire the Next Generation
Is tradition holding back progress in education?
How can schools honor their roots while preparing for the future?
On the Engaging Leadership Show, we've been exploring the balance between tradition and innovation in education.
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Joelle Magyar, Superintendent of Avon Lake City Schools, who shed light on this dynamic challenge.
With her extensive experience in education leadership, Joelle provides an insightful look at how schools can respect tradition while embracing change.
Her journey from classroom teacher to superintendent reflects a commitment to authenticity and student-centered leadership.
Here are some highlights from my conversation with her:
"It's important to keep traditions but also to stay open to change for the benefit of students."
Tradition Meets Innovation
Joelle speaks passionately about the importance of traditions in Avon Lake, where rituals like Friday night football foster strong community bonds.
Yet, she stresses balancing these traditions with progress, particularly in student interactions.
An example she cites is the impact of changing a football helmet logo, which highlights the community's deep-rooted values. Joelle advocates for reassessing traditions to ensure they serve students' best interests.
Strategic Planning with Community Involvement
During her tenure, Joelle launched a strategic planning initiative that brought together over 100 voices from the community, including business owners, clergy, and students.
This collaborative effort aimed to define a "Portrait of an Avon Lake Student," capturing the essential attributes needed for graduates to thrive in an ever-changing world.
This process identified four core attributes, ensuring students are well-prepared for the future.
Key Themes from the Strategic Conversations:
Respect for Traditions: While traditions are valued, there's an understanding that staying stagnant doesn't serve the students' future needs
Community Input: Joelle emphasized that hearing from a diverse range of voices, including those without current ties to schools, enriches the district's growth trajectory.
Student Advocacy: Including student perspectives was crucial, highlighting gaps in both academic and social-emotional provisions.
Education for a Changing World
In our discussion, Joelle explains how technology is transforming education, changing how students learn and demanding new teaching strategies to prepare them effectively.
"Doing the same old is not enough to prepare them for the skills they're going to need"
The focus on building resilience is pivotal, as it's a skill needed well beyond the classroom in real-life situations and future workplaces.
Joelle Magyar’s Leadership Journey
Joelle's leadership journey began in Cleveland's inner-city schools, where systemic challenges motivated her to seek administrative roles.
She progressed from elementary principal to superintendent, focusing on creating better educational environments with authenticity and humility. Her turnaround experiences highlighted the importance of relationships and community involvement, reinforcing her belief that leadership is about making tangible impacts, not just holding titles
“An effective leader must not only focus on academic excellence but also on building a culture that allows every student and teacher to thrive,”
Mentorship and the Next Generation of Leaders
Joelle is dedicated to mentoring emerging leaders by offering real-world experiences and encouraging critical dialogue. She emphasizes humility in leadership and the importance of building strong relationships with the board and community. Her advice for those advancing in educational leadership is straightforward: stay humble, focus on passion over titles, and commit to education and community building.
