Engaging Young Minds for Limitless Futures
Empowering Students, Strengthening Communities, and Shaping the Future of Education

What do you think is the most important skill for students to develop in today's rapidly changing world?
And what role does technology to shape-up the future of the next generation of leaders?
In this episode of the Engaging Leadership Show, we explore how Menifee Union School District (MUSD) is living up to its vision of “engaging young minds for limitless futures.” From developing job-specific pathways for students as early as transitional kindergarten (TK) to integrating core skills into daily learning, MUSD is redefining what it means to prepare children for high school, college, and beyond.
Our guest today is Dr. Jennifer Root, Superintendent of Menifee Union School District. With a Doctorate in Organizational Change and Leadership from USC and extensive leadership experience, Dr. Root is leading transformative initiatives to prepare students for a rapidly evolving world.
A Growing District with a Bold Vision
Menifee Union School District, located in Southern California between Riverside and Temecula, stands out as a "boom town" in a state where many districts face declining enrollment. Over the past four years, MUSD has grown by 2,000 students, now serving 12,360 children from preschool through eighth grade. This growth presents both opportunities and challenges.
We need to prepare children for things we don’t yet know exist. Life skills and a whole-child approach are critical to ensuring they’re ready for their limitless future.

Building Job-Specific Pathways: Starting Early
MUSD is pioneering career pathways beginning at the TK-8 level—a rare initiative in K-12 education. Inspired by models from Anaheim Union High School District and Porterville Unified School District, MUSD collaborates with local high schools, community colleges like Mt. San Jacinto Community College, and industries to align its pathways with workforce needs.
We’re making education relevant by showing students how what they learn connects to their future careers.

Developing Core Skills: The Student Success Attributes
Recognizing the importance of so-called “soft skills,” MUSD reframed them as core skills essential for success in any field. The district developed six “Student Success Attributes,” including responsibility and integrity, which are integrated into the curriculum
If we can develop these core skills with our youth, we’re giving them a leg up into their future world.

Parents and community members have embraced MUSD’s holistic approach to education. Programs like student recognition for core attributes have fostered strong community engagement on social media and beyond.
Who doesn’t want to think their child is a good human being? These programs support both parenting at home and what we’re doing in schools.
Menifee Union School District exemplifies how visionary leadership can transform education by focusing on both academic rigor and personal development. From fostering core skills to introducing career pathways early on, MUSD is truly engaging young minds for limitless futures.
