Building Future-Ready Schools with Purpose
Can a school district truly become the "best first choice" for families in an era of countless educational options?
In a time of limitless educational choices, what makes a school district not just an option, but the undeniable first choice for families?
On this episode of The Engaging Leadership Show, I had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Ryan Saxe, Superintendent of Berkeley County Schools, to explore how he’s reimagining public education with a strategic, customer-focused approach. Through his bold vision and innovative leadership, Dr. Saxe is transforming his district into a dynamic and thriving educational community.
Here’s what stood out to me from our inspiring conversation:
A Homecoming with Purpose
Dr. Saxe’s story begins with a homecoming. As a West Virginia native, he returned to lead Berkeley County Schools after years of leadership experience in Florida. This district, just an hour outside Washington, D.C., is one of the fastest-growing in the region, and Dr. Saxe sees this growth as a chance to innovate.
“We’re a bedroom community to D.C., growing fast, and with that growth comes great opportunity for innovation”

His mission is to ensure Berkeley County becomes the “best first choice” for families by delivering top-tier education and fostering an engaging environment for students to thrive.
Adopting a Customer-Focused Approach
In today’s world, public schools face unprecedented competition from private, charter, and online options. Dr. Saxe recognizes that to remain relevant, districts must adopt a customer service mindset.
“We have to view families as partners and ensure they experience the best we have to offer”
By enhancing everything from curriculum to extracurricular activities and parent engagement, Berkeley County is building a system that families can’t help but choose.
Balancing Flexibility with Accountability
One of the most powerful insights Dr. Saxe shared was his approach to accountability. He advocates for flexible measures that allow districts to address the unique needs of their communities while maintaining rigorous standards.
“Education isn’t a one-size-fits-all model—we need room to innovate while staying accountable to our students and families.”
This philosophy empowers schools to think creatively while staying grounded in outcomes that matter.
Developing Leaders and Preparing Students for Life
Dr. Saxe’s commitment to leadership development is transformative. Through initiatives like the Aspiring Leaders Network, he’s fostering a culture where mentorship and professional growth are prioritized.

At the same time, he’s laser-focused on preparing students for life beyond school—whether that means college, a career, or military service. By blending academic rigor with career technical education, Berkeley County is equipping students to succeed no matter the path they choose.
“We want every student to be college, career, or military ready. Whatever their future holds, we’re preparing them for success.”
Leading Through Relationships
Throughout our conversation, one theme stood out above all others: relationships.

Dr. Saxe believes that leadership is fundamentally about building trust and fostering collaboration.
“Leadership isn’t just about making tough decisions—it’s about building relationships that inspire action and growth”
This human-centered approach is at the core of his success, and it’s clear that it’s driving meaningful change throughout the district.
