Unlocking the Power of Data: Insights for Transforming School Leadership
How School Leaders Can Leverage Data to Drive Meaningful Change and Foster Student Success
How Can School Leaders Get Better at Using Data?
Can school leaders turn the overwhelming tide of data into actionable insights that improve education?
On the Engaging Leadership Show, I had the privilege of speaking with Professor Timothy Drake, Associate Professor of Education Leadership and Policy at North Carolina State University, whose decade-long research focuses on how school leaders can better utilize data to drive meaningful change. Our conversation uncovered the principles, challenges, and opportunities for educators to use data effectively, ultimately transforming schools into hubs of innovation and improvement.
Here are some highlights from our insightful discussion:
The Role of Data in Modern Education
Data in education has evolved significantly, especially following major reforms like the No Child Left Behind Act, which emphasized accountability and transparency. While these changes introduced powerful tools such as value-added assessments and student surveys, they also brought challenges in how leaders interpret and act on the data.
“Data doesn’t create meaning, people do. And it’s the human process that makes the story behind the data come alive.”
Professor Drake stressed that data is more than numbers—it's about the story those numbers tell and how school leaders can use that story to drive improvement.

Three Principles for Effective Data Use
Professor Drake shared a three-pronged approach for school leaders to maximize the potential of data:
1. Cultivate a Data-Informed Mindset
Think Beyond Numbers: Data reveals patterns and insights but must be combined with intuition and professional judgment.
Balance Experience with Evidence: Effective leaders know how to blend data-driven insights with their understanding of their schools and communities.
2. Develop Data Skills
Leverage Data Visualization: Simplify complex information to make it accessible to all stakeholders.
Understand Correlation vs. Causation: Avoid jumping to conclusions by analyzing root causes.
Disaggregate Data: Break down data into meaningful subsets to uncover inequities and opportunities.
3. Establish a Data-Driven Culture
Ask the Right Questions: Foster curiosity by focusing on inquiry rather than judgment.
Implement Cycles of Improvement: Use data to guide continuous reflection and adaptation.
“Data is a critical lever for school improvement. But it’s about how you gather, analyze, and act on that data.”
Overcoming Challenges in Data Use
Professor Drake highlighted the issue of data overload, where the sheer volume of information paralyzes decision-making. The key is to focus on timely, actionable data—such as teacher observations and formative assessments—rather than static, end-of-year test scores.
“Leaders often don’t struggle with analysis—they struggle with knowing where to start.”

The Role of Technology and AI in Data Analysis
AI as a Game Changer
Artificial intelligence and large language models are beginning to play a role in simplifying data analysis, offering hope for reducing the complexity of data-driven decision-making.
Challenges in Implementation
Adopting these technologies, however, is not without hurdles. Infrastructure gaps, especially in rural districts, and bureaucratic inertia can slow progress.
The Human Element: Curiosity and Collaboration
Above all, Professor Drake emphasized that the real power of data lies in the human element:
Curiosity: Leaders must approach data with a desire to understand and improve, not just to evaluate.
Collaboration: Engaging teachers, students, and communities in the data process ensures its meaningful use.
“The fundamental driving force is human curiosity. Data can guide us, but it’s our inquisitiveness that leads to true understanding and improvement.”
Professor Timothy Drake’s insights provide a clear roadmap for school leaders to harness the power of data effectively. By cultivating a data-informed mindset, developing data skills, and fostering a culture of inquiry, schools can transform how they operate and serve students.
